opengameart.org has a lot of visual assets for video game creators.

Not everything is CC0, but the search function lets users sort by a wide variety of free culture licenses.

Derivative artwork can be quite tricky and is often a legal gray area anyway, but it's probably best to err on the side of caution since we want users to be able to download and use the cliparts on this site with confidence knowing they are CC0.

Some fan arts are obviously not okay like a My Little Pony "fan art" that was posted.  It was an exact copy of the first image that comes up when you search Pinkie Pie, only sans cutie mark.  Copyright lawyers would not turn a blind eye to that one.

Whereas that Sorting Hat looks nothing like any official depictions of the Sorting Hat.  It's pretty unique.  If the name of the artwork was changed to "Talking Witch Hat" or similar it would be fine.  So much like Rob says, it's not just the artwork looking like copyright protected material, it's also about it making claims that connect to the protected work.

If we flat out state "No derivatives of copy-written works" we'll probably end up with significantly less users trying to submit works in that legal gray area.

Yes, the tags and description should be as objective as possible. However that should not be the same thing as not allowing unflattering caricatures and such things.
If I search for "pig" I would expect to find images of pigs. If it's a caricature where a politician is pictured as a pig then such a tag would probably be valid.

That's a good point about unflattering caricatures and I completely agree.  In this particular case, it was just a vector adapted from a real photo of the politician.

I guess what I mean to say is though the clipart itself might have an agenda, tags and descriptions should not.

#4 Re: Website Issues and Support » [BUG] sitewide restriction to prevent deletion of images by users » 2019-12-01 23:46:33

I've also deleted images that were clearly not in the public domain (ie: My Little Pony, Pepe, Star Wars, Diary of a Wimpy Kid art and UPS logos).  Anything I'm not sure of I've flagged and left in the report queue for other users to make a determination on.

It could be helpful if there was a way for users to say why they chose to delete an image.

Agree. Thanks to everyone who deleted images that were trademarked or suspicious to be under copyright. We just need to discuss these things here that's all. No offense to anyone and no hard feelings. Any help is appreciated.

Hi J4p4n, great to see you here on FreeSVG!

I agree with liftarn's three guidelines.  Number 2, no copyrighted images should definitely extend to derived and fan art, since the copyright of the property still lies with the original creator.

We should also have rules around promoting personal agendas.  I've especially noticed this being abused with old cliparts of political figures with tags such as "filthy capitalist" and "pig".  The point of this site is to share clipart so it can be reused as many people as possible and trying to use it to support a specific cause is not what the site is for.

I personally think descriptions and tags should be as objective, specific and sterile as possible so clipart can be easily found by users.

#6 Re: Website Issues and Support » [Feature] NSFW tag » 2019-11-12 02:41:07

So this reported image is fascinating, because to many cultures a picture of a pooping person with the caption "Figure from traditional Catalan nativity scenes" would seem in bad taste.   It was reported as explicit content with the note "description states: image from catalan nativity scene, really?"

But after a quick google the description is 100% correct.  A caganer is a Catalonian nativity tradition going back to the 18th century and it involves a pooping man.  I assume the "Nadal" part refers to Tió de Nadal, which is another poop related Christmas tradition in the region.  I have updated the description to give greater context to the image.

It's really quite interesting how we can interpret these images differently based upon our own cultural experiences.

Also, should we keep tags like "clipart" and "vector" since everything on the site is a vector and clipart?

#8 Re: Freesvg.org News » Tagging of archive SVGs » 2019-11-09 22:22:23

This is great news.  I have been off the site for awhile, but this week I plan to focus on moderating some of the draft archive vectors.

There are quite a few assets from the public domain video game, Glitch, so I have created a collection titled "Glitch Game Assets".  This may be helpful for other moderators when they come across Glitch game art.

I would "heart" this post if I could.  Scratch is an amazing website.  I use it all the time to teach kids coding and it's how I got into programming and Open Source myself.

You can upload SVGs to Scratch, but you can also create original SVGs in Scratch that can be downloaded and uploaded here!  It's the circle of life, er, vectors.

For anyone whose interested I recently wrote an article about how to do it: https://opensource.com/article/19/9/dra … -scratch-3

After a search when user presses any button to advance to the next page of search results, the page does not load and the screen reads "The page isn't redirecting properly"

When searching a term with a space (such as "pumpkin pie") the search form returns error "The q format is invalid."
